Design Note:

When I recently uploaded some pictures off of my Dad's camera, I found a whole bunch of really neat pictures he took, apparently from a trip he flew to Los Cabos. Now, my Dad is the last person to draw attention to himself, so pictures like these are few and far between. As far as design, I really wanted to keep it simple; while planning, I kept thinking in my head, "What would DAD like on it? How would DAD chose? What will DAD think?" So I chose as I thought he would: simple, clean cut design with lines and simple patterns. I chose the colors of his airline, and I'm really hoping he doesn't mind that I replaced the eagle on the the emblem with a flower (sorry, Dad - it's just for scrapbooking purposes, I promise!!)

New Header!

You like? It's still with ScrapStreet's Digital Design Team's Vintage Hawaiian kit - that background is one of my paper designs!

Lemme explain the new title... I think I've finally found my identity in scrapbooking. That question, that dreaded 'What's your style?' question has arisen so much lately, and I never really know how to answer.

I think I can.

Whatever I do, choose and use is always so practical! Here's where this idea came from. The Scrap Off at My Scrapbook Nook called for a project about 7 days in June. I actually chose 14 days because there were a few more exciting things happening in the week after. I immediately thought ''calendar'' and went to work. Now, my description was "desktop calendar gone awry" because that's usually what my life is like. :) There were such creative and positively off-the-wall entries by others for this challenge; but not mine. Mine was practical. Funky and silly, but practical. See?

And that's how it began.

I realized soon after that almost all of my choices are practical. I choose to use an arrow to actually point to something important. I choose colors because they are practical to the photo's subject. I choose bling because it's a page about shiny stuff. Or stuff that should be shiny, I guess. You know all those 'office supply' challenges around the last coupla years? Well, on my layouts, paper clips clip, staples staple, saftey pins pin and anything that looks like a ruler is usually one a page about something being measured.

I'm practical.

Maybe that's why, 10 years ago, I collected every shaped eyelet and pretty themed die cut. Boy, am I glad that phase is over for me. I can still use them, ya know... but you better believe that that one last leftover frog brad is going to be on my next pond layout. With frogs in the photo. Practically.

8 years today, and about this time! I still remember how not happy my bridesmaids were that we were up and going at 4am... when, just a year or two earlier, we were staying UP that late! It was a great day for us, everything was just about perfect. Just as hot as it has been this year, too! 93 that day and the petals were melting of the guys... Happy Anniversary, Doug, Love you!

And another HUGE congrats to my friend, Jenn, who had Baby Marissa yesterday! big smooches to you, Marissa & the boys!

P-P & Sesame!

Hooray! McKenna, while in the bath, told me she had to go pp on the potty! and SHE DID! We've been toying with potty training, staying very laid back about it as to not stress either of us out (hey, worked for Matthew!) She said, she did - regular toilet, not even with her little insert, books, or anything! She got her fav treat for doing so - a mini marshmallow - and is so proud, that she tried to go all night long... while wearing a diaper, she'd go, then tell me she had to go... oh well, it's a start, right? Not bad for a few weeks shy of 2 years 3 months!

Oh, tomorrow, you'll have to leave me a message bc we're going to Sesame Place! We've got the season passes and we've only used them at Sea World so far, so it's high time! We're skipping school and heading out (Daddy, too!) in the morning. Wish us luck getting some fun in before the storms hit!

Design Notes: What a versatile sketch! At first I had a difficult time choosing between the many subjects I found for this sketch. I chose these zoo fishtank photos mainly because of the center photograph. I love the way the main photo is almost cut in half - half land, half water - perfect for the design of this sketch. I had exactly three more fishy pictures to adorn the page, easily made into squares. After choosing and cropping all the pictures, it was just then about layering the color-similar "Relax" papers and creating titles and texts. Oh! - and then finding a lure for the page, too!

Memorially

So I never understood the phrase Happy Memorial Day, but I hope you all took a moment to remember. It's a day of tears and of pride for us. We had a great tribute at church, families affected by loss invited to stand. At that moment, my mom & dad's best man lost in Vietnam came into my prayers. They have a great tribute framed in their house... will post one day. I know Dad is more affected than he ever lets on, and he is in my prayers, too. Church tribute ended with a Staff Sergeant trumpeting a chilling taps. We did enjoy our local parade, from where this photo came. This is Matthew, excited for the start of the parade, reaching high at the sight of his Daddy's police department's car.

Upon driving back from the parade (and ice cream, near Daddy's post) we passed the services at the cemetary. Matthew asked about what they were doing. I tried to explain the best I could to a five year old that they were honoring the soldiers that died while fighting. He tells me, "Don't worry Momma, Jesus will bring them life."

Thought that was enough said. Happy Memorial Day.

New things...

branching out? not that I'd EVER leave ScrapStreet... EVER! but it's been fun reading blogs and looking for new opportunities in the last few days. I entered another sketch contest (what can I say? I just adore sketches!) and joined two new forums. I said hello at Creative Scrappers blog and forum and The Scrapbook Nook. Why not? Now, I'm notorious for forgetting boards and not going back to visit (in the very little spare time I seem to have these days) so don't be offended if I don't return for sometime. I've also re-found Transparent Touches and will be visiting A Million Memories today as well. These two sites just have such nice lady scrappers! ScrapStreet forever! (we're at Cannes, btw, didja know?) but maybe Lindsey will get to know a few more people in the near future!

finally!

not sure what happened, but I couldn't get into Blogger for weeks! Kept saying cookies were not enabled - checked on that and all was good as far as I can tell. Anyhoo, I'm here and all seems well enough. By now you know that we've wrapped up our gymnastics season (apart from 2 more levels with which I am not involved) and that we just got back from Disney! We had a BLAST and have 740+ pics to show for it! Went from a Disney mini-book to a Disney album to a Disney Collection! Haven't scrapped a page yet, but will soon. Having trouble starting know that MIL has more pics on her cam and won't be home till June. Weird, right?

So I submitted 2 pages this month... proud? Becky Fleck and PubCalls both - k, so they're both sketches, but it's a start, right?!?!

A Tree Grows...

...not well, but it grew. LOL
Whaddya gonna do. If you know me, you know I gotta try it at least once. Not the most amazing tree, but I'm okay with it in the book, if ya kwim. This was done for two challenges, actually; STAR @ ScrapStreet brought bugnsamsmom/Jenn to challenge us to use the title of a book and a line or two from it. I chose my favorite author, Shel Silverstein (never said I understood him, just love him!), from his book WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS, and in the tree trunk is typed out the poem of THE EDGE OF THE WORLD. I do wish that the leaves said 'where the sidewalk ends' rather than what they do, and that might have to be changed for my own sanity. Just not complete till it is, right?

2nd challenge is one from MyKitsAndPieces - one of their 8 weeks of challenges, to use creative journaling. That's where I got the idea to use a journal tree. Anyway, if it works or not, it's done and it's kinda cute. Still love this photo and will probably scrap it over and over!

For someone else...

A college roommate/teammate/we've been through it all together/friend asked me to make an album for her puppy, Roxy - this thrilled me and terrified me! I finally am getting down to it (I gave myself an old package of Aunt Gertie's Garden and 1 week to do it!) and it's not that bad. I have a scrap-a-page-without-photo phobia, so this is really a big leap for me. Here are the 1st four pages... whatcha think? These are all PageMaps, but I am about to lift some right out of CK next. I only have 3 more days to work on it!

I've never done anything like this before, for someone else, so tips/tricks/thoughts all welcomed!

Nothing exciting...so why post?

We've recently survived every sickness in the book - fevers, the asthma flare up, pink eye, bronchitis, strep AND the stomach flu. I wish they made spray antibiotics. Ya know, so you can just spray it after a cough or sneeze like air freshener.

Printer's back. Canon is AMAZING. my 610 Pixma broke. I'm pretty good at this stuff and even I couldn't find the problem. Apparently we didn't buy the warantee? Whaaa? So called Canon, couldn't troubleshoot, but they have a warantee program of their own. Replace mine for free with a factory refurbished. I know, I thought the same thing - made me a little nervous. My new printer is new. And works like a charm. Perhaps I can scrap tonight? If I can stay up passed 11, that is. Can someone PLEASE tell my kids that 6 am is simply not acceptable as a wake up time? Just trying to make it to the weekend. At least I won't have to adjust their schedules when the time changes.

March goal: Get the new camera fixed. Take more pictures.
I know I have a website check coming and it's time to fix the new camera. You know, the one that was a week old and I dropped it? Time to send it back. And then take pics till I wear it out. My pics lately are adorable, but (1) there aren't enough and (2) I'm just not inspired by them to scrap. Weird.

Went digi for the last week. Will update my albums so you can see. Happy Wednesday.

Big Boy

Matthew turned 5! The day he was born, I could not have fathomed this day. I couldn't quite get passed counting in weeks or months, in diapers, in laundry loads.

Now here he is, with a mind and body of his own...

We love to see his big boy habits, but it breaks my heart at the same time! He's got a sense of humor like no other (even his teachers pointed it out!), is happy at heart but definately knows what he wants!

Another gymnastics party while I can still convince him that's the cool thing to do (successfully evaded Chuck-e-Cheese!) and lots of friends and family to celebrate with us.

Relocation

Ok, so nothing is completely sealed in stone, yet, but we are beginning the packing process. I can pack anything ...anything at all... until I hit the scraproom!! I need to weed, clean, donate, store, and reorganize, all the while, packing a few of the things I use everyday to bring to Mom's.

I need tips!! Please post some tips here for moving the scraproom. We'll be moving in with Mom and Dad for a few months and I'm not afraid to give/donate/trash stuff away. I have some stuff stored in the large Priority boxes (the ones that can hold 12"x12") to keep things in theme. What the heck do I do with those? I know I'll use my brand new Crop-in-Style to bring along my newer papers and kits... but I have no idea how I'll keep all my embellishments with me in a very small space. And what do I do with the rest? Please help! Any and all tips welcomed!

No new resolutions this year - still being weight conscious, would like to find the time to do another show (Pippin auditions coming up soon!), adding TTT's message board to my dailies (or almost dailies), and I'm choosing one super layout from the magazine every month. I meant to do it last month, but never got to it, so today, I'm posting my 2 favs - 1 from December, 1 from January. If I can, I'm even going to try to scraplift it - y not?

This month, as the we're visiting the streets of Barbados (and I can tell you from experience, driving with the locals is one wild and crazy - and a little scary - experience there!!) Kory Ann Dordea's layout, Nothing Stops the Tears is my all-time favorite this month. I just love that it's not your normal happy layout, but it's beauty is not any less. I love this design.
